In Memory of Edythe Kay Marsa

The Parkinson’s Foundation mourns the loss of emeritus board member, Edythe (Edy) Kay Marsa. From 1993 to 2014, she was a member of the Foundation’s board of directors and served on several committees. Edy is survived by her husband William Marsa, who founded the Herbert Kay Parkinson Chapter in honor of her first husband who passed away due to complications from Parkinson’s disease. The chapter is located in Aventura and sponsors exercise classes at the Michael-Ann Russell Jewish Community Center.

La enfermedad de Parkinson (EP) se está volviendo cada vez más reconocida por sus características no motoras, incluyendo las dificultades cognitivas. Para las personas con Parkinson, estos problemas pueden ser angustiosos y estar entre los más difíciles de tratar con sus doctores y sus familias. La cognición es difícil de definir, pero por lo general se refiere a los procesos cerebrales a través de los cuáles podemos descubrir y comprender el mundo a nuestro alrededor.

Prevención de caídas

En 1817, cuando James Parkinson escribió su ensayo acerca de la enfermedad de Parkinson (EP), él observó que, “el paciente, con solo proceder a dar muy pocos pasos, suele caer inevitablemente.” En realidad, mientras envejecemos todos podemos tener un riesgo mayor a caídas, las personas que viven con Parkinson tienen el doble de riesgo que sus pares. Las caídas a menudo ocasionan lesiones que van desde los cortes menores a las fracturas, impactando la movilidad y la calidad de vida de una persona.
