We’re looking for leaders in the Parkinson’s community to empower those new to their Parkinson’s disease (PD) diagnosis through the Parkinson’s Foundation’s PD Self-Efficacy Learning Forum (PD SELF).
What is Self-Efficacy?
The ability to have influence over the conditions that affect our lives. A scientifically-based approach that is effective in helping people with Parkinson’s to develop the motivation and skills to manage PD.
How Does the PD SELF Program Work?
PD SELF is an innovative self-efficacy-based disease management program. PD SELF not only teaches information and skills; it also asks people to tap into their own power to create a personal experience of living with Parkinson's disease. Many people receive little guidance on coping with what the future may hold when first diagnosed with PD. But research shows that people can master the management of Parkinson’s with the right educational tools, improving their health and well-being. PD SELF aims to supply those tools, helping people within three years of their diagnosis to create a personalized health management approach.
How to Get Involved with PD SELF
Are you a patient leader or health leader in the Parkinson’s community? Help us share these tools with the newly diagnosed as a PD SELF Team Leader.
Our first Parkinson’s Foundation PD SELF Leader Training took place in 2016. The foundation and its PD SELF Team Leaders have launched several pilot programs around the U.S. in English and Spanish. Stay tuned for dates and locations.
Contributions from the Education Credit Management Corporation Foundation, the ProjectSpark Foundation and Diane and Gary Cook make Parkinson’s Foundation’s PD SELF Leader Training possible.
