According to researchers, Parkinson’s patients may experience falls because of their motor symptoms, such as uncontrollable accelerations, impaired balance, and freezing of gait. Approximately 50 percent of these falls require medical care. Data from the Parkinson’s Foundation Parkinson’s Outcomes Project is cited.

A new study suggests that higher doses or taking PD drugs for long periods of time are associated with a greater risk of developing impulse-control problems. The drugs pramipexole (Mirapex) and ropinirole (Requip) appeared to carry the highest risk. Dr. Michael Okun, Parkinson’s Foundation national medical director is quoted.
