The executive director of the National Parkinson Foundation Heartland, Jane Ann Gorsky, says Dorothy, like all caregivers, needs to take breaks. "If you use all your energy, and that means emotional and physical energy, you will have no more to give to that person that really needs it," said Gorsky.
Through Jennifer Enslein' own contributions and fundraising efforts, including a grant for $20,000 from the National Parkinson’s Foundation, Enslein was able to secure the Rock Steady Boxing program, which began in August, for the next two years. The funds pay for special equipment and instructor training at Rock Steady Boxing in Indianapolis, Indiana.
“She never invited discussion about herself,” said John W. Kozyak, NPF chairman and a friend of Ms. Reno’s for 30 years. “It took a lot of courage to stay in the public limelight when she had Parkinson’s.”
Okun was one of Reno’s long-time healthcare providers, and he remembers that the former attorney general brought a can-do attitude toward her treatment and therapy at the Center for Movement Disorders and Neurorestoration.
“We're mourning the loss of Janet Reno,” said Paul Kelly. “Just because you have Parkinson’s doesn't mean it's a life ending disease. You could still live out a long life.”
